Hydraulic properties of bentonite buffer material beyond 100 °C

چکیده
Bentonite buffer materials are important components of engineered barrier systems for the disposal high-level radioactive waste produced during nuclear power generation. The design temperature material is < 100 °C, and increasing can reduce required area. This characteristic necessitates evaluation thermal–hydraulic–mechanical properties at temperatures above °C to increase its target temperature. Therefore, hydraulic Gyeongju (KJ) bentonite were evaluated in this study, including soil–water curve (SWCC) conductivity. An experimental system was manufactured measure suction saturated conductivity KJ °C; relative humidity measured 25–149 with an initial water content 0, 0.06, 0.12 under constant saturation conditions. decreased as increased (10%–25% reduction 99 °C-149 °C). Temperature Effects on Geotechnical and Hydraulic Properties of Bentonite Hydrated with Inorganic Salt Solutions
This study investigated the combined effect of temperature and single-species salt solutions on geotechnical properties (swell index and liquid limit) and hydraulic conductivity of bentonite applying different cation types, concentrations, and temperatures. Results showed that both the swell index and the liquid limit decreased with an increase in salt concentration irrespective of the type of ...
متن کاملSealing Properties of Bentonite Suspensions*
Sealing with waterborne clays is a rapid and low cost method of controlling seepage through porous media whenever the clay source is within economical shipping distance of the sealing site. But more must be learned about this method of sealing before it can be fully utilized. Water impedance of waterborne bentonites, as measured by water loss in the filter press test, was correlated with their ...
متن کاملMechanical Properties of Plastic Concrete Containing Bentonite
Plastic concrete consists of aggregates, cement, water and bentonite, mixed at a high water cement ratio, to produce a ductile material. It is used for creating an impermeable barrier (cut-off wall) for containment of contaminated sites or seepage control in highly permeable dam foundations. The effects of water to binder ratio and clay dosage on mechanical properties of plastic concrete were i...
متن کاملEvaluation on Mechanical Stabilities of Clay-Sand Mixtures Used as Engineered Barrier for Radioactive Waste Disposal
In this study, natural bentonite was used as natural clay material and samples were taken from the Kalecik district in Ankara. In this research, bentonite is the subject of an analysis from standpoint of assessing the basic properties of engineered barriers with respect to the buffer material. Bentonite and sand mixtures were prepared for tests. Some of clay minerals give relatively higher hydr...
متن کاملPhysico-Mechanical Properties of Organo-Modified Bentonite Reinforced Cement Mortars
It is demonstrated that the addition of organo-modified Na-bentonite (OMB) particles to Portland cement mortar can promote its physical and mechanical properties. A series of experimental works on some important physico-mechanical properties of Portland cement mortars mixed with various dosages of hydrophobic OMB were performed. The obtained results confirm that the OMB provides a dense packing...
